Profit variability of vegetable farming in the upper Citarum watershed, West Java, Indonesia

Abstract Vegetable farming contributes major income to farm households in the upper Citarum watershed. The participation rate of farmers vegetable reached 55%, indicating that this region’s is very intensive. However, land holding diverse among farmers. also planted on a steep slope and vulnerable soil erosion. This condition implies low technological efficiency high risk production profit. In addition, indicated as cause erosion sediment increase River. study aims analyze pattern profit variability survey was conducted watershed Bandung West District. samples were two districts who performed on-farm agriculture activities randomly selected 499 households. data analyzed using descriptive statistics from 613 plots with 276 out sample Cumulative Distribution Function (CDF) employed distribution. results show has risk. Farmers can lose significant money but offer expected District higher than Bandung. According dominant commodities planted, tomato chili cabbage potato. Chili highest risks; over 30% had negative profits. To stabilize farmers’ incomes, improving technology planting patterns suitable for slopes increasing access market outlets agricultural infrastructure necessary.
